Sprinkler selection, layout and operation (November 2022)A well-designed overhead sprinkler system delivers water evenly across the growing area at an application rate that is compatible with the absorption rate of the growing media. This Nursery Papers explains industry irrigation best management practice parameters including coefficient of uniformity, scheduling coefficient and mean application rate, and provides a table listing approximate growing media blends absorption rates. It also discusses topics such as sprinkler layout and square grid design, pressure and flow, the effects of wind on sprinklers, and the comparison between upright and inverted systems.3 Feb 2026
Water test interpretation (March 2024)This Nursery Paper looks at why quality water is one of the critical requirements to grow quality plants. Water quality can not only impact plant health but affect soil, growing media, irrigation equipment, nursery activities. The properties of surface, underground and drainage water can vary. Topics covered include why and what to test, and what the results can mean.3 Feb 2026
Improving water and energy efficiency in production nurseries (May 2025)"This Nursery Paper explains the importance of water management in managing a production nursery, and why it makes good business sense to use water wisely and reduce waste. Topics covered include system design and water supply optimisation, metrics in best practice water management, irrigation scheduling and controller technology, disinfestation and recycling, and potential efficiency gains. Aspley Nursery is included as a case study to show how irrigation upgrades can improve energy efficiency and provide cost savings."3 Feb 2026

Pump Trouble Shooting 2013The following is a guide identifying common pumping problems. You may even be able to fix the problem without the need to contact a professional.3 Feb 2026
Pump Selection 2010Careful, well informed equipment selection, coupled with a scheduled maintenance program, and intelligent water management techniques, can assist growers to minimise energy costs and gain significant irrigation system efficiencies.3 Feb 2026
Pump Cavitation 2011Pump cavitation is a common pumping problem which, if not addressed, leads to impeller surfaces and pump bowls pitting and wearing, and eventually leads to mechanical destruction of the pump.3 Feb 2026
Irrigation Management 2010Water availability has not been a major concern to the nursery industry until recently. Increased urban pressure, recent drought conditions, and climate change concerns have shifted the community and grower focus more to water availability, use, and sustainability.3 Feb 2026
Irrigation Controller Features 2012Irrigation controllers are an integral part of an efficient irrigation system. A well selected irrigation controller can significantly reduce labour costs and improve plant quality, while also reducing water use.3 Feb 2026
Managing Water In Dry Times 2013During low rainfall periods, a considered strategy is required to make the best use of available water resources. Rather than make decisions on the fly, a pre-determined plan can be put in place to ensure the most efficient use of the available water is achieved. The plan should include measuring available water and water use, and short and long term strategies.3 Feb 2026
How to save water in production nurseriesThere are many ways that water can be saved in a production nursery. This fact sheet lists ten suggestions.3 Feb 2026
Hand Watering Efficiency 2010Hand watering is a common practice in many production and retail nurseries, with 55% of production nurseries using this method to some degree. Sometimes hand watering is regarded as an efficient irrigation method without full knowledge of the underlying principals and actual efficiencies of alternative methods. During 2008, DPI&F, Qld conducted an investigation into the efficiency of nursery irrigation practices on behalf of NGIA. This investigation surveyed a number of production and retail nurseries to examine labour costs and water use associated with hand watering, and compared it to the calculated costs of other irrigation techniques.3 Feb 2026
Evapotranspiration 2009The term evapotranspiration is simply the sum of evaporation and transpiration. It is the water lost to the atmosphere from the ground surface by evaporation and from the plant by transpiration.3 Feb 2026
Irrigation Water Use Nursery Paper 2006In this month’s Nursery Papers, former NSW Department of Agriculture officer, creator of the Waterwork training course and renowned industry ‘water guru’ Chris Rolfe explains how you can manage your watering regime to better match the water requirements of your plants.3 Feb 2026
